When people think about Montepulciano, the first thing that comes in mind is a glass of red wine.  The second image is a sunset over endless vineyards. But Montepulciano is not only that. If you want to escape rowdy tourists and enjoy a calm day off the beaten path follow our tips, discover a less beaten track and walk, cycle or drive to these hidden treasures around Montepulciano.

The Fosso Bianco, Bagni di San Filippo.

Bagni di San Filippo is a small village on the slopes of  Mount Amiata and on the edge of Val d’Orcia (Southern Tuscany, Unesco World Heitage) known for its thermal water.  For nature lovers the Fosso Bianco is the perfect place, a stream in the woods with several hot springs which form a series of pools where you can swim all year long. The shape of the  limestone formations have inspired the evocative name ‘the white whale’.  Have a look at the picture and guess why…

If  you prefer art to natural landscapes, or even better better art and natural landscapes, one of the places you should definitely not miss is the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore.

When exploring the area you can reach the Abbey through Trequanda  and Asciano. This itinerary allows you to enjoy the countryside at the heart of the Crete Senesi area. The Abbey is situated in a beautiful position among the eroded soil of  “Calanchi”  and  forests of cypresses and oaks.  When there, don’t miss the nearby hilltop village of Chiusure, where you can stop for un aperitivo (pane, prosciutto, pecorino e un bicchiere di vino rosso of course) and climb the panoramic terrace.

The Abbey was founded in 1313 by Sienese Bernardo Tolomei who retired in this place, property of his family, after he converted to Benedictine order. Some years later he began the construction of the Abbey. The structure as you see it today has been completed during the following centuries.  In the Great Cloister, the history of the Order is shown in the works of many famous artists (Signorelli and Sodoma among them).

Whereas the Middle Ages and the Renaissance times are testified here by so many works of art, the Civic Museum of the Prehistory of Mount Cetona documents the various phases of human settlement in the area around Mount Cetona from the Paleolithic to the Bronze Age. The prehistorical human presence in this area begins in the mid-Paleolithic period: Neanderthal man lived in caves on Mount Cetona, leaving as traces of his passage tools made from sharpened stone and remains of animals hunted.

At the Belverde Archeological Park  some of the caverns that open up in the travertine rock can be visited.

One of the most known Italian expression in the world after bravo, pizza, pasta, opera is bella or better the saying ciao bella.
Bella in grammar is an adjective and like most of the Italian adjectives agrees in gender and number with the noun. Bella can be used for people, objects and animals.
But is not that simple because bella changes also when is in front of a noun or after a noun.
Let ‘s see in practice but first test your Italian with this table.
Fill the gaps and read the following article from the Italian newspaper Corriere della sera to check your answers.

Let’s speak Italian now :Usiamo insieme l’aggettivo italiano più famoso al mondo.

Completa la tavola con l’aggettivo bello

Un ………. libroUn………uomo

Un………esempio

Un……studenteUna…………isola

Una …….donna

Ora passiamo al plurale

uomini……… ragazzi……….donne…….
……..uomini…….ragazzi……..donne

Bei > Usiamo infine bei davanti a ogni altra consonante o gruppo consonantico: “bei ragazzi”, “bei tramonti”.

Il plurale femminile è sempre belle in ogni caso: “donne belle”, “belle donne”, “belle anime”, “belle specchiere”, “belle zie”.

«Everything lies underneath the idle talk, the noise, the silence and the feelings, the emotion and the fear… Rare and fickle sparks of beauty. And then the dreariness and the miserable»

After several years The Great Beauty is still debated among movie lovers: is the movie about Rome, about its inhabitants, about Italy’s decadent middle-upper class, or just a tale about a lost man and its nightmares?

Better leave these questions to professionals, and focus on the most enjoyable aspect of the movie: the visions of Rome. You could even watch the movie with no sounds (but you’ll miss a great soundtrack) and still enjoy it. Being a Roman I surprised myself staring with awe when the camera followed the main character in his solitary walks, though I actually made many times the same itineraries, watched the same palazzi, the same facades.

Director Sorrentino seems to suggest that Rome is so varied, so complicated, that you’ll always find some part of it in tune with your mood, as it happens to Jep, the cynical yet sensitive main character.

Where to go in Rome?

Let me help you here: if you just arrived in Rome to learn Italian and feel like you can party all night long… well it’s unlikely you’ll have the chance to dance on the ‘Martini’ terrace near Piazza Barberini as seen in the movie, but you’ll find plenty other terrazzas in the city centre or in the fashionable EUR neighborhood, many of them inside luxury hotels offering brunch and aperitifs. If you’re looking for something less sofisticated, reach Ponte Mazzini and walk downstream to have a drink in Trastevere or upstream to have an aperitif in Jep favourite restaurant (the old, impressive La Veranda).

After your party night, walk up in Gianicolo hill to Acqua Paola Fountain, or reach the Aventine hill where you can peer at Saint Peter’s dome from the world’s most famous keyhole (Villa Malta main gate) or rather from the gracious Giardino degli Aranci. Now take a deep breathe and witness the first sunbeams reflecting on the awakening city. Far from the crowd and noisy cars, you’ll finally have a glimpse of the city true splendour. By now you’ve probably noticed that in both the movie and this article are missing some of Rome’s greatest landmarks: Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Piazza di Spagna and Trinità dei Monti stairway (nobody in Italy have EVER called them ‘Spanish steps‘).

Kappa Language School Rome

Now follow me

To the breath taking Parco degli Acquedotti at sunset where Romans do sports, walk with their dogs, or just have a chat sitting below the huge acqueduct arches, watching the magnificent structure struggle with the centuries and, not to far on the east, the hillls of Castelli Romani. Now let’s have a pizza, mingle with locals, speak Italian and relax. If you want to go back to the city centre before the subway closes, hurry up and go see Piazza Navona, Palazzo Altemps or Via Veneto at night; you might actually come across actor Toni Servillo, as happened to me!
